20110118: We have a Problem

In S1-02, there are 4 groups.
3 groups have 6 members, 1 group has 5 members.
Every member contribute points to the group score.

To be fair to the group with 5 members only, 2 suggestions were given:

Suggestion 1: Ben suggested to find the average of the total points contributed by the members
Suggestion 2: Dexter suggested multiply the points of the 3 groups by 5 and the points of the group with 5 members by 6.

Are both suggestions workable.
Justify your answer.

  1. Ben's idea is not as good as dexter's idea as it would not be practical to calculate the exact point as there will be decimal points or even recurring decimals and if we round it off, it would not be fair anymore. So even though dexter's idea will give us a lot of points, it will still be fairer.

  2. I believe that Ben's idea is not as good as Dexter's idea as in Ben's idea, one has to do 8 calculations while in Dexter's one would only need to do 4. Whats more, in Ben's idea, there might be recurring numbers or decimals, thus we have to round off and that would be that accurate.

  3. I think Dexter's idea is better as ben's idea will result in recurring decimals. rounding it off is both troublesome and unfair hence i think Dexter's idea is better.

  4. Wait i think both are wrong
If in both group one people never got it right so the points will be 5 points for the group of 6 and 4 points for the group of 5.
Then u multiply 5 with 5 and 4 with 6 u get 25 and 24 respectively, thus doing that will still allow the group with 6 people to win since only one person in each group didnt get it right but i think it is fair enough so since i have no better idea so i would want to stick with Dexters idea. so that group i wish u are lucky

  5. I think as the leader of that Group is better not to do anything.
As If like someone nvr bring s his/her work and we have to deduct points then we will have 1 member less to deduct any points which is better so being a group of five have its advantages and disadvantages. I will continue discussing this matter regarding the grouping points system with my group mates :D

  6. My idea is not as good as Dexter's as my idea is unfair. If one person in the group scores very low, the points of the group will drop very low. However Dexter's idea, takes all the points in the group so it is fair.

  7. I feel that Dexter's suggestion is better as if we take ben's idea, and when some group members score badly the group points would be greatly affected.

  8. I think both are not that correct as for Ben's solution I agree that there will be a recurring of decimals. However for dexter's solution, the number of people in the group will affect the overall results even if we multiply by 5 or 6. So, I would not comment on both solutions

  11. When calculating, we assume that the percentage of people doing their work is the same. However, what anon1(The anonymous on top) said that Dexter's idea is no good as if one person in the 5 people group & one person each in the other groups did not do the quiz, the points would be different. But think, 1out of 5 & 1out of 6 is DIFFERENT!(duh, wonder why anon1 thinks they are the same, must give him three good knockings on the head) So, Dexter's plan is fair.

  12. No but if one from the group of five doesn't do his work, it is not fair to compare with one who doesn't do his work from the group of six because the value of one person from the five not doing the work is greater than the value of one person from the six. Get what I mean?
