6AM Quiz (2011, July 09): It's not that complicated...

There is more than one way to evaluate this fraction. What are they?

Describe 2 methods that you could approach this question.

  1. The first method is by cancelling out all the numbers with common factors to ease the calculation.
The second method is to multiply the numbers first before cancellling them out so there would be less numbers to cancel.

(I wont be surprised if its wrong cause I'm still tired :L)

  2. 1) USE THE RULE BODMAS, so multiply all the numbers first, which will be
    30+120+270/6+24+54
then add the numbers in and you should get 420/84 then divide the answers which will give you the answer of :5.
    2) I don't know :(

  3. 1. Cancel out all the common factors from the numerator and the denominator before calculating the sum to ease the effort needed to put in calculating everything. For example, 6 is the numerator and 2 is the denominator, when cancelled out, the answer is 3.

    2. This method is just multiplying and adding all the numerators and denominators accordingly. After that just take the numerator divided by the denominator.

  4. 1. Cancel out the numbers that can be crossed out, like 6 and 3, as long as one of the numbers is the numerator, and the other is the denominator. Then do the adding of the left over numbers and do the division.

    2. We use the rules of BODMAS and do the multiplication first for the numerator and denominator. Then we add the numbers, for both, and then finally divide them.

  5. 1) The 1st method is to divide the numbers evolved in multiplication, divide both the denominator and numerator by the same value until the equation is in its simplest form, then do the equation.

    2) Do the equation, then simplify the answer to the simplest form.

  6. 1)cancel the numerator and the denominators with their common factors. In the end you should find that you get 15/3. Solve the equation to get 5.
eg.6x5/2x3 (You should cancel out 6,2,3 because 2x3=6)
2)Solve the equation normally by multiplying the numbers and adding them up. You will get 420/5 which also equals to 5

  7. the 1st 5 from left to right change to 84

  8. Method 1: Cancel numbers from the numerator and denominator that are factors. Such as, 6 from the numerator and 3 from the denominator. So the 6 will become 2 and the 3 will become 1.This will make calculation easier.

Method 2: Using the BODMAS rule, multiplication comes before addition (from left to right), so all the multiplication statements should be done first so that the addition will be much easier.

  9. Method 1: Multiply the numbers first from the left to right (umm the rule) so it will be 30 +120 + 270 over 6 + 24 +54 which is = to 420 over 84 = 5 over 1.

    Method 2: I don't know...

  10. Method 1)Cancel out all the common factors in the numerator and denominator of the fraction to get (3*5)+10/(2+3).Then solve it further to get the answer of 5.

Method 2)Use the rule of BODMAS to solve the fraction to also get the answer of 5.

  11. A number of you pointed out correctly for the method we could use calculator to compute the value directly, that is, taking into account the BODMAS rule. Good. To make it clearer, we should also highlight the need to insert 'bracket' when keying in the set of numbers in the denonminator so that they would be treated as the denominator and be treated first.

As of the "cancel out" method that some of you described. It's still not clear enough for one to understand how to get the common factors out. Need further clarity.
