Chapter 4: Algebra - Can you tell where has gone wrong?

Julie says that
3a + 2a + 5a = 10a³
and
7b x 5b² x 6 = 35b³ x 6
Do you agree with Julie? If not, what are the mistakes in her algebraic manipulations?

  1. No i do not agree, Julie mixed up with the 2 operations, "x" and "+"

  3. No. In the first equation, she should not cube a. In the second equation, she should simplify it more.

  4. I agree with Ryan. In the first equation, she has mixed up with the 2 operations but in the second one, she is halfway there, in an algebraic expressions, when numbers with no algebra and the operation is division or multiplication, it can be used to, in this case, multiply the algebraic integer

  5. I do not agree.
She has taken the multiplied all the a together and added the numerals.
Her 2nd statement is correct but not to the simplest form, she can simplify it further so that 7bx5b^2x6=210b^3

  6. No. Julie has mixed up the 2 operations

  7. I do not agree with Julie's response. For the first statement, she is not multiplying, so, there should not be a cube a. For the second statement, she could simplify if further by multiplying.

  8. !st equation
She is wrong. She has multiplied the variables together instead of adding the variables however her coefficient is correct. 3a+2a+5a=10a.

    2nd equation
Her answer would be correct, however it is not in its simplest form. it should be expressed like this. 7b*5b^2x6=210b^3

  9. No the first statement is wrong as she had multiplied all the a together and then added together the numbers which was how she got that answer.
    Her second statement is correct.

  10. But she can simplify it further

  11. I do not agree with her. In the first equation she should not have cubed the 'a'. In the second statement she should have simplify it further.

  12. In the first statement, she should not cube the final answer and just leave it as 10a.

In the 2nd statement, she should simplify it further.

  13. No I do not. She is almost reaching her answer on the 2nd equation though she just need to simplify her answer.

  14. No, I do not agree with both of her equations as for the first equation, by adding the 3 variables, there should not be a cube at the back of the variable. She should just put 10a for the first answer.
For the second equation, she did not simplify her answer enough and left the equation uncompleted. The correct answer should be 210^3.

  15. I do not agree with Julie. As she cubed a in the first equation, when she should have left the answer as 10a instead of 10a^3. (She multiplied the a's in the equation).
Her answer in the second equation is partially correct as she didn't simplify her answer. (she could have been correct if she simplified it.)

  16. 3a + 2a + 5a is NOT 10a³
    Yes, the numbers may be added correctly, but a + a + a is not a³ (which is a x a x a).

    7b x 5b² x 6 = 35b³ x 6
It is not simplified. It would be correct if she had simplified it.
